Rubber Track Dimensions Cross-Reference: Find Tracks by Width, Pitch and Links

Key Takeaways

  • Use this page when you have one or two numbers and need to confirm the third
  • Every rubber track size is three numbers: width x pitch x links
  • Width and pitch are in millimeters. Links is a count, not a measurement
  • The same width can pair with multiple pitches depending on machine class
  • The same pitch can appear across very different widths and machine types
  • One wrong number means the track will not fit. This cross-reference helps you catch errors before ordering
  • If your combination is not in any table, call us. It may be a specialty or regional size we carry

How Do You Use This Cross-Reference?

This page works three ways depending on what you already know.

You have the width but not the full size

Go to the Look Up by Width section. Find your width and scan the rows to see which pitch and link count combinations exist at that dimension. This narrows down your options fast.

You have the pitch but not the width

Go to the Look Up by Pitch section. Find your pitch and see which widths and link counts pair with it. This is useful when you can measure lug spacing but the track is too worn to read the full code.

You know your machine class but not the size

Go to the Look Up by Machine section. Find your machine type and see the standard sizes that class runs.

If you already have all three numbers and just want to order, go straight to our Product Finder. If you are not sure how to measure any of these dimensions, start with our guide on how to measure rubber track size first.

How Do You Look Up a Track by Width?

Find your width in the table below. Each row shows a complete size that exists at that width, the pitch it pairs with, and the link count. If your width matches multiple rows, you need the pitch to narrow it down further.

Width Full Size Pitch Links Typical Machine Class
180mm 180x72x37 72mm 37 Mini excavator 1 ton
180mm 180x72x39 72mm 39 Mini excavator 1 ton

450mm 450x86x55 86mm 55 CTL / skid steer large
450mm 450x86x56 86mm 56 CTL / skid steer large

Specialty machine sizes including walk-behind loaders, drill rigs, and crawler carriers run outside these standard ranges. Call us today at (866) 516-8473 with your model and serial number and we will find the right size.

The 400mm row is the one that catches the most people out. A 400mm track can run a 72.5mm pitch on a large mini excavator or an 86mm pitch on a CTL. They look the same from the outside. The pitch makes them completely different products. If your track is 400mm wide, confirming the pitch is not optional.

How Do You Look Up a Track by Pitch?

If you have measured the pitch on your track and want to see which widths and sizes use that pitch, find your pitch in the table below.

Pitch Sizes at This Pitch Typical Machine Class
52.5mm 300x52.5x80, 350x52.5x80 Mini excavator 3 to 5 ton
54.5mm 350x54.5x80 Mini excavator 4 to 5 ton
55mm 300x55x78 Mini excavator 3 to 4 ton
72mm 180x72x37, 180x72x39, 230x72x41, 230x72x43, 250x72x45 Mini excavator 1 to 3 ton
72.5mm 400x72.5x70, 400x72.5x72 Mini excavator 6 to 8 ton
86mm 320x86x49, 320x86x52, 400x86x50, 400x86x52, 450x86x52, 450x86x55, 450x86x56 CTL / skid steer all sizes

Pitch sizes outside this range, such as 48mm, 55.5mm, 60mm, 81mm, and 100mm, are found on specialty machines including drill rigs, crawler carriers, walk-behind loaders, and large excavators. Call us for help with specialty sizes.

The 72mm pitch group covers more machines than any other single pitch. If your measured pitch is 72mm, you are almost certainly on a mini excavator in the 1 to 3 ton class. The width and link count narrow it down from there.

The 86mm pitch group covers the entire CTL and skid steer class. If your pitch is 86mm you are on a CTL or skid steer. Width and link count tell you which one.

How Do You Look Up by Machine?

If you know your machine class but are not sure which sizes apply, use this as a quick starting filter before going to the detailed tables above.

Machine Class Common Widths Common Pitch Typical Link Range
Mini excavator 1 ton 180mm 72mm 37 to 39
Mini excavator 1.5 to 3 ton 230mm to 250mm 72mm 41 to 45
Mini excavator 3 to 5 ton 300mm to 350mm 52.5mm to 55mm 78 to 80
Mini excavator 6 to 8 ton 400mm 72.5mm 70 to 72
Compact track loader small 320mm 86mm 49 to 52
Compact track loader mid 400mm 86mm 50 to 52
Compact track loader large 450mm 86mm 52 to 56
Skid steer small 320mm 86mm 49 to 52
Skid steer mid 400mm 86mm 50 to 52
Skid steer large 450mm 86mm 52 to 55

Note on the 450mm range: Compact track loader large models go up to 56 links on some machines such as the Bobcat T870. Skid steer large models top out at 55 links. If you are in the 450mm range, confirm your exact link count from the track sidewall or machine manual before ordering.

Specialty machines including crawler carriers, drill rigs, walk-behind loaders, and trenchers run sizes outside this table. Call us today at (866) 516-8473 for help with specialty machine sizes.

This table is a starting filter only. Once you identify your machine class, go back to the width or pitch tables above to confirm the exact size. Do not order from this table alone.

How Do You Verify Your Dimensions Before Ordering?

This cross-reference narrows down your options. One of these three steps confirms your exact size before you buy.

Track sidewall

The full size code is molded or stamped into the outer edge of most tracks near the lugs. Wipe off the mud and check along the side wall. Three numbers in order: width, pitch, links.

Machine manual or manufacturer site

Every machine manual lists the factory track size. If yours is gone, most manufacturers publish spec sheets online. CAT keeps model spec data accessible by machine model and serial number. For an independent reference on how undercarriage dimensions relate to machine specs, the Equipment World undercarriage guide is a reliable US industry resource.

Product Finder

Enter your machine model into our Product Finder and skip the cross-referencing entirely. It returns the correct size and current stock in one step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between width, pitch, and links on a rubber track?

Width is how wide the track is in millimeters across the ground contact surface. Pitch is the center-to-center distance between drive lugs in millimeters. Links is the total count of drive lugs around the inside of the track. All three must match your machine for the track to fit and run correctly.

Can two tracks have the same width but different pitches?

Yes. A 400mm wide track can run either a 72.5mm pitch on a large mini excavator or an 86mm pitch on a compact track loader. Same width, completely different tracks. This is one of the most common ordering mistakes and why confirming the pitch matters as much as the width.

What is the most common rubber track pitch?

The 72mm pitch is the most common across mini excavators in the 1 to 3 ton class. The 86mm pitch covers the entire compact track loader and skid steer class. Together these two pitches cover the majority of compact machine track replacements in the US market.

My pitch is 86mm but I do not know my width or link count. What do I do?

An 86mm pitch means you are on a CTL or skid steer. Common widths in this pitch are 320mm, 400mm, and 450mm. Measure the width and count the links to get your full size, or enter your machine model into our Product Finder for a direct match.

What happens if I order the right width and pitch but the wrong link count?

The track will be either too short to seat over the undercarriage or too loose to stay on during operation. Link count sets the total length of the track loop and must match your machine exactly.

My size is not in any of these tables. What do I do?

Call us at (866) 516-8473 with your machine model and serial number. Older machines, regional variants, and specialty equipment sometimes run sizes outside the standard ranges listed here and we source them regularly.

Ready to Order?

You have your dimensions confirmed. Browse Excavator and Compact Tracks or Skid Steer, CTL and MTL Tracks depending on your machine, or go straight to the Product Finder to match by model or size. While the machine is stopped, check your undercarriage parts too. Worn sprockets and idlers will cut new track life short.
